MEDICARE MYTHS DEBUNKED

Since Mair Agency specializes in Medicare coverage, we hear a lot of incorrect information about Medicare. Whether you’re new to Medicare or very familiar with it, keep these Medicare myths in mind while you shop around for the perfect plan for you and your family.

Myth #1: Medicare covers assisted living and home care.

At some point in retirement, you may decide that assisted living or home care is a good option. If this does occur, you can’t rely on Medicare to foot the bill. While Medicare may cover a portion of skilled nursing care, nursing home care, and some home health services, it will not pay for assisted living or custodial care. If you believe you’ll need to fund these costs eventually, we can help you explore your options.

Myth #2: Medicare is only for Americans who have worked.

To be eligible for Medicare Part A with no premium, you need a work history of around 10 years. If you stayed at home to raise your children or care for your family, don’t worry. You may enroll in Medicare Part A coverage at no charge based on your spouse’s work history. The caveats to this is that you must be at least 65 and your spouse will need to be at least 62. Keep in mind that Part A is the only part of Medicare that considers your work history.

Myth #3: Medicare is the same price for everyone.

While most people won’t have to pay a premium for Medicare Part A, your work history may require you to. Also, if you decide to sign up for a Medicare Supplement plan or Medicare Advantage plan, your cost will be different than someone who does not. In addition, Medicare Part D (prescription drug coverage) comes with premiums that vary. Fortunately, the Mair Agency can work with you to ensure you get the best deal on your health insurance plan.

Myth #4: Medicare costs and coverage will always stay the same.

Medicare assesses its costs and makes changes on a yearly basis. Most of the time, premiums and deductibles will go up. Sometimes, however, they will go down. Coverage can also change from year to year, especially for Medicare Part D and Medicare Advantage plans. Rest assured you’ll receive a notice about your cost and coverage every year.

Myth #5: When you turn 65, Medicare coverage is automatic.

Some people assume they don’t have to do anything to take advantage of Medicare, as long as they’re 65. Here’s the truth: If you’re already receiving Social Security or Railroad Retirement Board benefits, your coverage will be automatic. Three months before you turn 65, you’ll receive a “Welcome to Medicare” packet. Otherwise, you’ll have to actively enroll. Our team can guide you through the process and answer any questions you may have along the way.

Even though Medicare has been around for decades, there’s still a lot of confusion around it. Fortunately, our Medicare experts are here to support Raleigh residents. If you need help finding a plan or have a question about Medicare, don’t hesitate to contact us.
