If you currently have a Medicare Advantage plan, you may be wondering if and when you can return to Original Medicare. The good news is you are welcome to do this during the Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment period between January 1st and March 1st 2019. During this time, you are welcome to return to Original Medicare or:
- Switch to a different Medicare Advantage plan
- Sign up for a stand alone Medicare Part D Prescription Drug plan
Why You May Want to Return to Original Medicare
Medicare Advantage offers a variety of benefits you may depend on. Your Medicare Advantage plan may include coverage beyond Original Medicare and pay for prescription drug coverage and other benefits such as benefits.
However, many of these benefits are not set in stone. If you opted for a Medicare Advantage plan to receive coverage for a diabetes medication you take on a regular basis, you may find out that your plan no longer covers your particular medication. If this is the case, you may want to return to Original Medicare.
How to Find Out About Changing Benefits
Every fall, you should receive an Annual Notice of Change. Be sure to read this notice thoroughly to find out whether any of the benefits you used are no longer covered. Keep in mind that a plan may change at any time so you may receive a change notice at other times throughout the year.
