The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), and President Biden all came together to announce a Special Enrollment Period (SEP) for individuals and families. Its purpose is to help those who have experienced uncertainty and unique circumstances during the pandemic.
If you have Obamacare health insurance, SEP will allow you to enroll in 2021 health insurance coverage. You qualify to do so as long as you live in a state with a HealthCare.gov Marketplace. From February 15th 2021 to May 15th 2021, your state’s Marketplace will ensure this SEP is available to you. You’ll be able to either update a current application or submit a new one.
In the event you live in a state with a State-based Marketplace (SBM), you can visit its own platform. Once you do, you’ll notice an area dedicated to the SEP with details on how to take action.
How This SEP is Different
Normally, you need a qualifying event in order to participate in a SEP. Examples of qualifying events include moving, getting married, having a baby, adopting a child, or losing health coverage. In this special SEP, however, you can apply without one. This SEP is far more flexible and you can use it to enroll in a new plan or make a change to your current one.
Keep in mind that if you’ve already had some out-of-pocket healthcare costs this year, they won’t transfer to a new policy. You’ll need to start over at $0 on your new plan’s deductible and out-of-pocket maximum. Whether you are looking for a new Cary, NC family dentist or a doctor that can give you a flu shot, we are here to help you find that.
